Fontana city was founded during the year 1913 and has ever since grown to a population of 190,356 people. The city is located in San Bernardino County, with the Interstate 15 passing diagonally through the northwest part of the city and the Interstate 20 and State Route 210 intersecting the city from east to west. The cities economy was mainly rural until WWII, When Henry J. Kaiser built a huge steel mill within the city. This has since been replaced with the Auto Club Speedway.
The biggest library in San Bernardino County, could be found within Fontana. It also has several various attractions and amenities for its tourists who stop in and residents. There is a lovely city park and the Auto Club Speedway together with a recently renovated historic theatre, which is home to live shows. Fontana is the home to the 5K run and Fontana Days Half Marathon, which is the fastest half marathon course in the world.
The economy of Fontana is mainly industrial, but has a large influence in the trucking business. There are a lot of truck dealerships, in addition to the many industrial equipment sale centers located all over the city. There are a lot of centers, such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Target and Sears, which distribute their products. Salvage yards are quite popular here, along with small car dealerships. Retail is likewise very popular in the city. There are two main shopping centers in the city, with Palm Court in the south end of the city and Summit Heights Gateway/Falcon Ridge Town Centre in the north. "Miracle Mile" is part of a commercial strip zone that lies along the 210 freeway in between Sierra and Citrus Avenues. Fontana Auto Center has two major dealerships in this zone.
Even if it is situated outside the city limits, the Auto Club Speedway is a major driver of economic activity within the region. There are tens of thousands of fans who converge here for roughly three or four days a year, to watch the races. For these few days, the businesses in Fontana thrive.
