Costa Mesa is a multicultural city situated in Orange County. The city presently hosts a population of 113,440 individuals in its sixteen square miles. The Pacific Ocean is located just a mile away from the cities southern border. Costa Mesa was incorporated in 1953 with a population of approximately 16,840. Initially, the cities economy was dependent on semi rural farming but as the city has grown, it has come to depend increasingly more on retail commercial companies and action sports industries, like surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Los Angeles is located around 37 miles northwest from the city. San Diego is eighty eight miles south and San Francisco is 475 miles north. Other cities which are near are Newport Beach, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Santa Ana.
The city has several well maintained amenities, comprising two golf courses, three libraries, and more than 25 parks. It is also home to 20 public schools and the post secondary institutions Vanguard University, Whittier Law School, Orange Coast College and Nation University.
There are numerous buildings which cater to the arts in downtown Costa Mesa, like for example the South Coast Repertory Theater, Orange County Performance Arts Center and the Renee and Henry Segerstorm Concert Hall and theater.
