Situated on the south side of the island is Touro University. They are planning on opening a state of the art cancer research facility. One economic plan of Vallejo is to revive Mare Island, that will be done by the structure of new neighborhoods. There is plenty of rich history and an abundance of national historic landmarks situated here, none the least of which is the one of the nations oldest decommissioned naval bases and shipyards. Together with these, there is also a 19th century brick industrial warehouse and a couple of coal shed artist studios. A couple of other notable historic landmarks are the Officers mansions, Alden Park and Chapel Park (designated historic landscapes), and the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. Finally, the Saint Peters Chapel, which was made during 1901, houses the biggest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany's stain-glass windows.
